Brass

The Brass are the “bugles” in Drum and Bugle Corps. They range in size with the smallest playing the high notes to the largest playing the lowest notes.

The tuba is a special marching version called a Contrabass Bugle. It weighs 35 pounds.

In that summer heat, it isn’t just the musicians who need a shower. They also have to take their brass instruments into the shower to rinse off the sweat and sunscreen. It is also the brass musicians’ responsibility to make their horns spotless and shining for each competition.

Many brass players had to learn another instrument to play in Drum Corps. For example, trombone players might play baritone or euphonium and French Horn players might play Mellophone.

You’ll always see water jugs lined up on the practice field because getting enough water during long, hot practices requires constant hydration.
